Weight Cutting for Beginners: Avoid the 6 Common Mistakes

Your first weight cut is nerve-racking — and that’s exactly where most mistakes happen. The good news: almost every beginner mistake can be avoided with a little planning. Here are the six you see most often, and how to get around them.

Mistake 1: You pick too low a weight class

The most expensive mistake of all. Aim for a class that demands a brutal cut and you’ll spend the whole camp exhausted. Pick a class close to your walking-around weight — see our guide to weight classes in combat sports and how much you can realistically cut.

Mistake 2: You start too late

Water weight can go quickly, but fat loss takes time. If you start cutting two weeks before the fight, you’re forced into hard, dangerous methods. Start fat loss 6-10 weeks out, so you only have a little water weight left at the end.

Mistake 3: You cut calories too aggressively

A sudden calorie deficit burns muscle and kills your training. Aim for a gentle loss of 0.5-1% of body weight per week. Read calories and macros in fight camp to set your numbers right.

Mistake 4: You overdo the sauna

The sauna feels productive, but it’s the most demanding method and should only be used for the last couple of hundred grams. See why in our guide to sauna and weight cutting.

Mistake 5: You forget the refuel

After the weigh-in you have to fill back up — properly. Too much plain water too fast works against you. Follow a plan for refueling after the weigh-in with fluids, salt and carbohydrates.

Mistake 6: You experiment during fight week

Fight week is not the time to try water loading, new supplements or a new meal plan for the first time. Always run a dress rehearsal in a normal training week first.

The short version

Pick the right class, start early, cut gently, use the sauna sparingly, refuel smartly, and never experiment on fight day. Do that and you’re ahead of most.

Important

This guide is general information, not medical advice. If you’re new to the sport, do your first cut together with your coach — and cut less than you think you can. If you feel ill along the way, stop and seek help.
